Earthcare Solutions is proud to be part of a forward-thinking public-private partnership with Hanover Borough, transforming how communities manage biosolids and organic waste. Presented at the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Association (MABA) 2025 Summer Symposium, the project showcases how circular economy principles can create cleaner water, greener streets, and stronger communities.
Facing aging infrastructure, increased flooding, and rising biosolids disposal costs, the Borough of Hanover has embraced a sustainable solution: a gasification facility developed and operated by Earthcare. Unlike traditional disposal methods, Earthcare’s high-temperature gasification process destroys emerging contaminants, such as PFAS and microplastics, while converting municipal biosolids into marketable biochar and clean energy.
The $34 million facility, planned for co-location at Hanover’s future public works complex, will generate revenue through tipping fees, biochar sales, and voluntary carbon credits. Projected returns to the Borough’s Stormwater Authority will be reinvested into local green stormwater infrastructure. This innovative model not only reduces environmental risks but also creates long-term economic, ecological, and social benefits for the Borough.
With Earthcare managing financing, operations and compliance, and the Borough providing oversight and site access, this initiative serves as a replicable model for other municipalities seeking a smarter, cleaner way to manage organic waste.
