January 23, 2024: A recent article by WSKG in Vestal, NY reports that local communities in Steuben County, NY have undergone water testing for PFAS. Initial testing revealed some parts of the county had concentrations that exceeded the maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) proposed by the EPA. One township within the county, Thurston, has banned the land application of biosolids while the town of Cameron has a one-year moratorium on landspreading. Town and county officials continue to gather information and evaluate remediation alternatives.
This is but another example of the growing concern about the impacts of land spreading biosolids due to the presence of PFAS. As more work and testing are being done to completely understand the depth and breadth of the issue nationwide, Earthcare’s gasification process is an emerging technology to directly tackle this issue in addition to providing 95% volume reduction and several other co-benefits. Our flagship facility in Bethel, PA will be processing 60,000 wet tons of biosolids annually beginning in Q1 2024. Learn more about this exciting project here.
